The beginning of the Islamic Hijri year and its importance
Islamic year started in whose era?
When did the Islamic year begin?
Before Islam, history was written only in AD years and months and there was no system of writing history among Muslims. During the caliphate of Hazrat Umar, in 17 AH, Hazrat Abu Musa Ash'ari (RA) wrote a letter to Hazrat Umar (RA) saying that letters were issued by him in different areas of the government, but his letters did not include history, and writing history is very beneficial.
It happens that on which day the order was issued by you and when it arrived and when it was executed. The understanding of all these things depends on the writing of history, so Hazrat Umar considered it a very reasonable thing and immediately called a meeting of Akbar Sahaba. Four types of opinions came out from the Companions who gave advice in this:
1. A group of Akbar Sahaba was of the opinion that the Islamic year should be started from the year of the Prophet's birth.
2. The second party was of the opinion that the Islamic year should be started from the year of Prophethood.
3. The third group was of the opinion that the Islamic year should be started with Hijra.
The fourth group was of the opinion that the Islamic year should be started with the departure of the Holy Prophet.
After these four types of opinions emerged, they were formally discussed.
Then Hazrat Umar (R.A.) pronounced the decision that birth or prophethood may lead to differences in starting the Islamic year. Because the day of your birth, similarly, the day of your mission is not determined exactly at this time. Rather, there is a difference and it is not appropriate to start with Wasal because the year of Wasal is a year of sorrow and shock for Islam and Muslims. Therefore, it would be appropriate to start the Islamic year with Hijra
